Disaster Relief For Families With Autistic Children

Hi my name is Ateshia Craig. I am a married mother of six children. Four of those children are on the autism spectrum. The most severe is Gavin he is 11 and nonverbal. We lost everything but our faith during Hurricane Harvey. Our business our home and all its contents literally everything. We spent over a month and a Fema Hotel two and a half hours away from home. We stayed there for over a month and we were removed from the hotel due to the children screaming 12 to 15 hours out of the day. We pooled our resources and by the grace of God were able to secure a rental in the spring Woodlands area. Well we have been there 3 weeks now and we are in danger of losing our home because we have been unable to return to work because all of our equipment was ruined during the disaster. I receive a denial from FEMA although I have no idea why. The children are just now getting settled in and to move them at this point would be detrimental more than I can even tell you. I am in a compromised position because most disaster relief case workers seem to think that because I have secured my own rental that I am in a better situation than most and I'm not as much of a priority. Due to my childrens disorder and their inability to tolerate change this is a high-priority situation. This rental is a temporary fix to a lasting problem. I I am in a home I can't pay for. I need help. I need someone to help me bridge that gap between now and until I can find a way to replace my equipment and get back to business. We are living off disability and disaster unemployment. If I lose this home we will be a family of eight on the street with nowhere to go because we are out of options. I've turned to everyone I can think of and there are no specific resources for children with autism during a disaster. Why? this is the population that needs the most help. Does anyone have any ideas

  • Have you tried a local autism support group\network, United Way or Easter Seals? I’m not sure if any of those will help but I will also be earnestly praying for you and your family. Blessings to you!
