I have a 24 year old adult son who was diagnosed with Asperger's when he was 20 years old. Through out his years in school; his Doctors could not figure out what was wrong with him. I know he fell through the cracks bc Autism wasn't well known as it is today. My son was removed from the Public School District when he entered Junior High bc of behavioral problems. He was transferred to school with disability. I will fast forward. He completed High School & got his diploma. Years after High School his behavior had gotten worse due to traumatic experiences in High School years. My son was always distanced from others in school. At recess he wonder off by himself away from other people. His art work made him a little popular with his peers but he didn't exactly like the attention so he stopped drawing. Ever since he was little he was a very smart little boy. He learned all his States & Capitols when he was 3. He knew everything about every dinosaur. Once he entered school the playing with his hands increased & his withdrawal from social activities decreased. He was always happy around Mom, Dad & little sister, grandma, grandpa & aunt. He didn't speak sentences until he was 4 or 5 years old. With a few words I guess we just knew what he wanted. We had many picture books and things that he couldn't communicate with us he used books to express what he wanted. I knew from when he was 12months old something was not right & something was wrong with his behavioral health. Noise bothered him a lot. He preferred to be alone in his room away from the hustle & bustle of family life. His room was his safe zone. We didn't think nothing of it and allowed him to watch all the animation movies he wanted & all the dinosaur movies he wanted. Some he watched over & over & over. We just wanted him to feel relaxed & safe in his space. I was a first time mom and the Doctors treated me like I was overreacting first time mom. It was very frustrating for us & we felt helpless. After graduating High School we pretty much kept him at home & He would go do errands with me & his baby sister. He was never violent or overly aggressive. At that time were went through different Doctors trying to figure out what was wrong with him. Finally when he was 20 we found a psychologist through the behavioral health through Sutter Gould Medical Foundation & we finally got a diagnosis. He was referred to a Psychiatrist for further care. Through the Psychiatrist he was pull on the right medication that he has been taking since. His behavior has been much better since being on medication. He uses his iPod to keep out the noise around him & he uses it every where we go. He can speak & communicate with others & understand to a certain point. Usually he likes to talk about his interest only. I've always spoke to him like I spoke to my other children. I didn't want him to feel different even though he was very different. He is able to go to dinner with us with we dine out. He is able to cook himself breakfast, lunch. He actually use to work at his Grandpa's pigeon ranch & enjoyed manual labor. He was able to follow instruction and work a few hours every morning. The all ended when his grandpa passed away a few years ago. He is now 24 & I've been trying to find a program to put him through for job training skills or further education since he is interested in drawing & anime & or creating animation. My sister in law told me to apply him through Howard Training Center but they only accept applicants that are approved through Valley Mountain Regional Center. I called Valley Mountain Regional Center & they tell me he doesn't meet their disability requirement to be accepted by them which is Asperger & Anxiety Disorder. They only take extreme disability cases. We need to help him adapt to working or school. What to do next? Where can I start? Who do I call? What other resources can I get for him? Anyone who has a child with Aspergers let me know who I can call to help our son build his future. He gets SSI since he graduated High School but we would like him to get a job one day. The amount he gets isn't near enough to live on his own. Please someone HELP us. WE live in northern Ca.
